ABB leads motor technology innovation: non-magnetic synchronous motor achieves IE6 ultra-high energy efficiency 12 / 09

Recently, ABB, a leading global player in electrical and automation technologies, announced a significant technological breakthrough – the successful launch of the Magnetless Synchronous Reluctance Motor (SynRM), achieving the anticipated ultra-high IE6 energy efficiency. This innovation not only underscores ABB's continued leadership in motor technology but also sets a new benchmark for global industrial energy conservation and sustainable development.

The thoroughly validated ABB Magnetless Synchronous Reluctance Motor, for the first time, realizes IE6 ultra-high energy efficiency under a magnetless design. This energy efficiency level, defined by ABB as a 20% reduction in energy losses compared to similar IE5 motors, showcases its remarkable energy-saving capabilities. As part of the technology portfolio encompassing Permanent Magnet (PM) motors and Flux-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motors (PMaSynRM), the Magnetless SynRM caters to diverse application needs, providing efficient and reliable solutions across industries.

Stefan Floeck, President of ABB's IEC Low Voltage Motors division within the Motion Control business area, stated, "Motor drive systems in industrial facilities are the primary source of power consumption. Therefore, maximizing motor efficiency holds immense potential for energy savings. Our newly introduced Magnetless Synchronous Reluctance Motor, achieving the anticipated IE6 energy efficiency level, elevates energy conservation to a whole new level. This not only helps enterprises reduce energy costs and enhance production efficiency but also contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals."

The launch of the Magnetless Synchronous Reluctance Motor marks another milestone for ABB since its pioneering work on synchronous reluctance motor technology in 2011. Since its inception, ABB's synchronous reluctance motor series has continually improved its efficiency, from IE4 to the IE5 version introduced in 2019. IE6 is now seen as the next phase showcasing the technological prowess and advantages of synchronous reluctance motors. Although official industry standards have yet to be established, ABB has adopted the criterion of a 20% reduction in energy losses for each higher IE efficiency class compared to the previous one, also applying this method to the Magnetless Synchronous Reluctance Motor.

The uniqueness of the Magnetless Synchronous Reluctance Motor lies in its rotor, which requires neither magnets nor windings, resulting in negligible power loss. This not only eliminates the use of rare earth metals but also offers versatility with various inverters for required control, making it highly practical. Additionally, with dimensions identical to those of equivalent IE3 induction motors, it can easily and directly replace traditional motors, helping customers ensure the sustainability of their future operations amidst fluctuating energy costs.

ABB's innovation underscores its profound expertise in motor technology and underscores its unwavering commitment to promoting global sustainable development. By integrating engineering experience with software technology, ABB optimizes various sectors such as manufacturing, transportation, energy, and operations, providing efficient and reliable solutions to customers worldwide.

Looking ahead, ABB will continue to delve deeper into motor technology, introducing more innovative products to meet the demands for efficient and energy-saving motors across industries. Simultaneously, ABB remains committed to driving industrial transformation and sustainable development, contributing to the achievement of global climate targets.

As global emphasis on energy conservation, emission reduction, and sustainable development intensifies, the introduction of ABB's Magnetless Synchronous Reluctance Motor undoubtedly heralds a new wave of innovation in motor technology. We anticipate that ABB will bring forth even more groundbreaking achievements in the future, making greater contributions to global industrial energy conservation and sustainable development.
